Pan American Gymnastics: Games, Championships and Qualification

Pan American gymnastics is the sport as organised across the Americas and the Caribbean: a continental union founded in 1971, gymnastics at every Pan American Games since 1951, and championships that decide who goes to the Games. Pan Am Gymnastics Guide is an independent reference to all three, starting with the Toronto 2015 qualification lists this domain once published.

How gymnasts qualified for Toronto 2015

Places in gymnastics at the 2015 Pan American Games were won at the 2014 Pan American Gymnastics Championships in Mississauga, Ontario, held from 20 August to 1 September 2014. The Games had room for 176 gymnasts — 114 in artistic gymnastics, 46 in rhythmic and 16 in trampoline — and no nation could enter more than 22 across all three disciplines: five men and five women in artistic, six in the rhythmic group and two individuals, and two per trampoline event.

The places went to countries, not to named gymnasts: each national Olympic committee then chose who would fill them, and places a country declined could be passed to another. That is why the lists drawn up in September 2014 differ in a few lines from the entries that finally competed at the Toronto Coliseum from 11 to 20 July 2015, where 24 nations took part.

The four 2014 lists this domain once hosted

In September 2014 the Pan American Gymnastics Union published four one-page lists, in Spanish, titled Países clasificados a Juegos Panamericanos 2015 — countries qualified for the 2015 Pan American Games. They sat on this domain under /en/documentos/ and are still cited by Wikipedia in English, Spanish and Portuguese, which is why their old addresses lead here. What each one said:

The September 2014 qualification lists, summarised
ListWhat it allocated
Men's artistic (MAG)57 gymnasts from 20 federations: USA, Colombia, Brazil, Puerto Rico, Canada, Cuba, Chile and Mexico 5 each; Argentina 2 + 1; Venezuela, Peru and Costa Rica 2; eight more nations 1
Women's artistic (GAF)57 gymnasts from 22 NOCs: eight teams of 5, Chile, Puerto Rico and Peru 2 each, and 11 nations 1 each from the all-around
Rhythmic (RYT)Two individuals for the USA, Brazil, Mexico, Canada, Argentina and Venezuela; one for Colombia, Ecuador, Chile and Cuba; groups for Brazil, the USA, Mexico, Canada and Cuba
Trampoline (TRA)Canada and the USA 2 men and 2 women each; Mexico, Brazil and Argentina 1 man and 1 woman; Colombia 1 man; Venezuela 1 woman

Allocations, not final entries. The women's list itself says the places are not nominal and may be reassigned once nations confirm or decline them. In the end Costa Rica took one of its two men's places and the other went to Venezuela. On the women's side the sources disagree over whether Uruguay's place passed to Chile: see the women's artistic list.

Gymnastics at the Pan American Games

Men's artistic gymnastics has been on the programme of every Pan American Games since the first, in Buenos Aires in 1951, and women's events since Chicago 1959. Rhythmic gymnastics joined at Indianapolis in 1987, and trampoline — contested by men in 1955 and 1959 — returned for good at Rio de Janeiro in 2007. Every edition is listed in gymnastics at the Pan American Games.

Who runs gymnastics in the Americas

The Pan American Gymnastics Union — Unión Panamericana de Gimnasia in Spanish, abbreviated UPAG, or PAGU in English — is the continental union of the International Gymnastics Federation (FIG) for the Americas. The FIG's own history dates its founding to 1971, in Cali, Colombia. Its members are the national gymnastics federations of the region, and it organises the Pan American Gymnastics Championships, whose results feed qualification for the Pan American Games. More in the Pan American Gymnastics Union explained.

The union's official website is upag-pagu.com. This domain, upag-gymnastics.com, carried an earlier version of the union's site until the mid-2010s and later lapsed; Pan Am Gymnastics Guide has no connection with the union and speaks for no federation. For entries, rules and official results, go to the union, the FIG or the national federation concerned.

The disciplines

  • Artistic gymnastics. Men compete on six apparatus — floor, pommel horse, rings, vault, parallel bars and horizontal bar — and women on four: vault, uneven bars, balance beam and floor.
  • Rhythmic gymnastics. Women perform to music with a hand apparatus, either alone or in groups of five on the floor, with a sixth gymnast as reserve in Pan American Games teams.
  • Trampoline. Gymnasts perform routines of ten skills on a trampoline. Synchronised trampoline, double mini-trampoline and tumbling are contested at championships but not at the Games.
  • Beyond the Games. The union also governs acrobatic and aerobic gymnastics, gymnastics for all and parkour, which hold their own continental events.
